Each lesson is designed to meet the needs of the student. Students attend tutoring sessions in my Oak Park home once or twice per week. Lessons are typically 55 minutes in length and include a variety of multi-sensory activities including a combination of reading, spelling, writing and discussion.
To reinforce a new skill students read aloud words and phrases.
They also write relevant words on a white board. Reading and writing are intertwined throughout the lesson.
Phonics skills are foundational to reading.
Students practice phonics skills each session.
Did you know there are seven ways to spell the long sound of /e/?
Reading and writing are challenging!
I dictate review words and current words and the student writes them in his or her dictation book.
Students apply their newly-acquired knowledge from the day's lesson.
Study of "gotta know" words - - or words that don't follow regular patterns.
Some words like "said" and "again" just need to be learned by practice and drill.
The purpose of the lesson is to apply the new skill to practice.
At each session students read a fiction or non-fiction passage and discuss comprehension questions.
In addition to words and phrases mentioned above, students write sentences dictated to them.
